Named for pro skier Doug Coombs, these skis are as versatile and adventurous as he was. The K2 COOMBack skis perform well with alpine, telemark, or touring bindings. The CoomBacks are agile yet stable with a strategically modest shape (so they don't get hooky bombing big open faces) and lightweight with a thoughtful cap construction (so you can keep them out all day.) To make hiking easier, a SnoPhobic topsheet keeps piles of snow off your skis and pre-cut skins are available (sold separately). This year, K2 added a Carbon Web to their COOMBack skis for increased edge grip strength without increased weight.
  • Triaxial Braiding - strands of fiberglass braided around a milled wood core provide torsional rigidity for added control, ease, forgiveness, responsiveness, and energy
  • Cap Construction - built by a sophisticated molding process that envelopes the core and internal materials with the top layer of the ski, making it durable and lightweight
  • SnoPhobic Topsheet - new snow-repellent topsheet prevents snow from collecting on a ski and adding weight to a climb. Applying wax to the topsheet increases snow shedding performance.
  • Skin Clip Arc - a concave notch in the tail of the ski ensures that the skin clip, regardless of size or skin brand, stays securely centered on the tail.
  • Flat Tails - provide backcountry utility by allowing you to plunge the tails easily into firm snow
  • Tip and Tail Holes - equipped with removable plugs, these are the attachments points for K2 skins. They also fit the functional needs of a backcountry skier including the ability to build a rescue sled or construct various ski anchors.
  • BIO Core Tech - a blended core of aspen, bamboo, and paulownia, that has consistent density, great strength to weight ratio, and fast growth carbon sequestration, a 15% weight savings over our traditional fir/aspen cores, and a reduced impact on the winter world.
  • Powder-Specific Tip Design - the widest point of a powder tip is 7 cm back from the standard contact point, adding stability and predictability and making the ski less likely to hook or grab in light crusts or variable conditions.
  • Progressive Sidecut - two different radii, or sidecuts, enhance the versatility of wider waist skis. Standard sidecut theory is based on using a single radius. This works well on narrower skis, but becomes overpowering on wider skis, especially in variable conditions. The use of progressive sidecut on wider waist skis guarantees improved turn initiation and hard snow performance.
  • All Terrain Rocker - 30% rocker for agility combined with 70% camber for stability
  • Carbon Web - pushes the balance between weight and strength gaining downhill performance without adding additional mass. Located in the tail and the forebody of the ski, the Carbon Web increases edge grip when you need it most in the backcountry.
Industry Review:

Skiing MAGAZINE Assessment:

K2 gives the Coomback a lightweight cap construction (for forgiveness and ease of touring), a modest sidecut (so it isn't hooky at speed), and a rockered shovel. There are livelier skis on hardpack, but it excels in powder. Testers praised its smoothness and edge-to-edge control.

WildSNow.com Assessment:

In my opinion a 100mm(ish) waist ski of average weight (vs width) is possibly the best class out there for human powered backcountry skiing. Versatile, easy on the skintrack, and still tons of fun on the down without lack of weight causing funny behavior at speed. My choice in this category for the past few years has been the K2 Coomback.

Backpacker MAGAZINE Assessment:

Want a ski that'll float through powder, destroy crud, wiggle between tight trees, and arc a wide variety of both inbounds and out-of-bounds turns-all for a slight weight gain over the Drift and Manaslu? The Coomback (or the women's Gotback) is your one-ski workhorse. Our testers loved both versions for their substantial sidecut (great for easy turn initiation) and tip rocker, which arcs the ski tip off the snow, increasing float and eliminating grab in windblown conditions.
