Nordic Ski Racing Tips

Our Nordic ski Experts have spent years training and competing as competitive racers. Here are their top tips for developing the skills necessary for successful Nordic ski racing:

Nordic Racing Tip #1

You’ve got to keep your legs fresh before a race. Get out and ski the day before your race, but make it an easy ski so that your legs are ready to go in the morning.

Nordic Racing Tip #2

It’s extremely important to stay hydrated the day before a race. Add electrolyte supplements to your water bottle to make sure those are dialed in.

Nordic Racing Tip #3

Wax is so condition dependent. And it can make or break your performance in a race. Talk to the Experts at our Nordic Center in Park City for their suggestions, or look up TOKO’s wax recommendations for race day in your area.

Nordic Racing Tip #4

Post-race it is super important to remember to cool down and then stretch immediately after. Don’t just stop after your full-out sprint for the line and get in the car and go home. It’s ideal to get your breathing under control again while you’re still skiing. Then make sure you take the time to stretch to help your muscles recover.

Nordic Racing Tip #5

The cool thing is that the Nordic Center has products designed for the sole purpose of getting you the essential nutrients to be efficient while racing. For example, you might be hesitant about using Sport Legs for recovery, but they work fantastic. Don’t be afraid to experiment with nutrition supplements that are safe and natural. Just make sure to test them well in advance of race day.

Nordic Racing Tip #6

Structure is often overlooked on race day. TOKO’s Structure Nordic Kit is basically like putting a race-day-specific grind onto your ski. This tool allows you to take part of the base structure off, so there is not as much base surface on the snow. With cold snow you need more suction, so a fine, linear structure is ideal. Warm or wet snow means you need less suction, and a more aggressive grind will help shed water to make your skis glide better.
